Filming has started for Moptopphoto.com. For the start of the website we will be mainly feature DIY videos, on how you can achieve great images with fairly inexpensive lights, cameras, and lens. I have teamed up with David Ruano from http://potsphoto.com/ in creating the first set of videos for the site. The first set of videos, the subject, will be random in content. It are going to do headshot, fashion, automotive, and not only photo but video content. So, stay tuned for that. An update on the the website. The website has been built and we are just waiting to finish populating the site with content.

We are going to add a section of website that I haven’t seen on any other site in our category. We will be offering FREE HD stock footage. There is a catch we will be asking for a donation and credit. The donation will be going to the server bill and we will be giving anything else to charity. No, Charity is not a stripper or escort. We mean a non-profit organization. What we mainly ask is a credit in your short film or feature film. More information to come soon about this section.

What we want from you guys is to think of ideas that you want to see a How To video on. It can be photo, video, editing or anything in the digital creative world. We will do our best to make a video on what you want to see. This is what I think will set our website apart from any other photography/video website.

So stay tuned for more information.

This is a really great portrait photography trick that requires no special equipment: use a black marble to see how the light hits on the eyes of the person you want to photograph:

Just hold a fist in front of you (like holding a telescope), tuck the marble just under your forefinger, and there you have it – the same lighting an eye would get.

And since you know you want the catchlights to be up at 1 to 2 o’clock, or up high at 12 o’clock, simply turn about until you see the catchlights you want.

The neat thing is that the curves and wrinkles of your hand show you the amount of contrast and backlight.

Genius and cheap. [Photo.net via Petapixel]

Well, not just yet. This new camera was just announced at NAB 2012 with a release date coming this summer. The product on my want list is the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

Here are some of the specs:

Shooting resolution: RAW at 2.5k (2432 x 1366)

Frame rates: 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p, 30p

Sensor size: 16.64 mm x 14.04 mm (significantly smaller than DLSR sensors)

Lens mount: EF and ZF mount compatible with electronic iris control

Battery: Integrated Li-Ion with 90 minute life

Recording Formats: RAW 2.5K CinemaDNG, Apple ProRes (compressed), Avid DNxHD (compressed). All compressed recording in 1920×1080 10-bit YUV with choice of Film or Video Dynamic Range.

Storage: Removable 2.5″ SSD

All that for just under 3k. That is amazing for a small camera that is sub 5k to have. Its small, portable, all-in-one, cine camera that is easy to use. Also, to top it off you can capture 2.5k over thunderbolt. It had me at under 3k.

Check out some of the sample footage HERE. The camera on Black Magic Design’s website HERE.

Can’t wait to use this camera!

If you’re looking for a way to draw more attention to the crucial elements in your photographic composition, the Fibonacci Ratio offers a way to direct your viewers eye to the critical parts of your photo.

Earlier this year we highlighted another great composition rule, the Rule of Thirds, in our guide to getting more out of your point and shoot camera. Digital Photography School takes an interesting look at another composition rule, Fibonnacci’s Ratio. Often referred to as the “divine ratio” because of the numerous places it appears in the natural world—such as the spiral of Nautilus shell—it offers a way to guide your viewer’s eye to the area of the photo you want them to focus on.

When applied to photography, this ratio can produce aesthetically pleasing compositions that can be magnets for the human sub-conscious. When you take the sweet spot of the Fibonnaci Ratio and recreate it four times into a grid, you get what looks to be a rule of thirds grid. However, upon closer inspection you will see that this grid is not an exact splitting of the frame into three pieces. Instead of a 3 piece grid that goes 1+1+1=frame, you get a grid that goes 1+.618+1=frame.

The photo above is one of their sample photos, showing how the ratio can yield a focus that guides the viewer right to the subject’s face/eyes. Check out the full guide at the link below, including videos, to see how Fibonnacci’s Ratio can help improve your photography.

Before Steve Jobs passed away in the fall, he apparently had made it known he was interested in meeting with Lytro CEO Ren Ng about the possibilities of light field capture technology in iPhones. And as the story goes, Ng obliged, setting up a meeting as swiftly as is humanly possible.

This is the account given in the book Inside Apple—and excerpted by 9to5mac—which also has insider info about Jobs’ plans to transform the television and education industries. But even more so than the other two, the possibility of Lytro’s technology in an iPhone excites me the most, because of how new the actual tech is in the consumer world. When they met, Jobs was apparently impressed enough to ask for a formal email from Ng.

The company’s CEO, Ren Ng, a brilliant computer scientist with a PhD from Stanford, immediately called Jobs, who picked up the phone and quickly said, “if you’re free this afternoon maybe we would could get together.” Ng, who is thirty-two, hurried to Palo Alto, showed Jobs a demo of Lytro’s technology, discussed cameras and product design with him, and, at Jobs’s request, agreed to send him an email outlining three things he’d like Lytro to do with Apple.

Could you imagine the possibility of light field capture combined with apps? Of course, getting the Lytro’s guts shrunken down to fit inside a phone is a completely different challenge. But it will eventually happen someday, and when it does, I’d venture to guess it will be awesome.
